Straight Time was interesting because you think it's going to be a "man beaten down by the criminal justice system" story, but it turns out he's an unreconstructed recidivist psychopath who belongs in prison. At least that was my read.
I can't think of any other stories like that. Where the character is initially broadly sympathetic, but is later shown to be a menace. Unlike, say, Tony Soprano, who's a hood from the beginning, even if you kind of like him.
Great faces in it, too. From when actors (at least the men) had great faces, not beautiful faces.
I'm definitely not Alexander Wales, although I am a fan of him. Possibly you got that impression because I link to a short story of his in my blog's about page.
