Thanks Sam, I'll take this an as invitation to look you up if I ever am in Ireland. I am of course totally unqualified to be commenting on much of anything, but I do so regardless as a manifestation of my love for the blogging medium.

Straight Time was interesting because you think it's going to be a "man beaten down by the criminal justice system" story, but it turns out he's an unreconstructed recidivist psychopath who belongs in prison. At least that was my read.

I can't think of any other stories like that. Where the character is initially broadly sympathetic, but is later shown to be a menace. Unlike, say, Tony Soprano, who's a hood from the beginning, even if you kind of like him.

Great faces in it, too. From when actors (at least the men) had great faces, not beautiful faces.
